The American Academy in Rome offers awards to graduate and professional scholars and creative professionals on an annual basis; with the exception of one award, all applicants must be U.S. Citizens.  It also offers a number of limited-term Visiting Scholar appointments each year, with no restriction on nationality.

The Fondazione Lemmermann offers scholarships in the classical studies and humanities to graduate students wishing to conduct research in Rome on a topic related to Rome or Roman culture from prehistory to the present day. There are no restrictions on nationality, although basic knowledge of Italian is required.

Each year, the International Center for Medieval Art offers five ICMA-Samuel H. Kress Research Awards to support research and publication in medieval art history.  Applicants for these $3,000 awards must hold a PhD but not be more than five years beyond receipt of PhD; additional qualifications apply.
